Project Description
The Intra-Operative MRI Suite (IMRIS), situated on the second floor within a bustling operating corridor of Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s main campus, encompasses combined OR and MRI rooms, a control room, two induction rooms, an equipment room, an electrical room, an IT room, and a storage room. Beyond the main construction phase for the suite, several enabling phases were necessary to install structural supports and shielding. These phases also addressed modifications and additions to the Pneumatic Tube System, which serves the entire NCH campus, and the office layout of the existing Clinical Lab on the first floor beneath the suite, which operates 24 hours a day. Furthermore, temporary access for personnel and material deliveries was maintained throughout the project.
The Siemens Healthineers Magnetom Vida MRI, the newest MRI model purchased in 2021, marked NCH as the recipient of the second unit produced by the factory at that time. The project encountered numerous challenges, including scheduling MEP shutdowns around surgical schedules and other hospital activities adjacent to our space, working numerous weekends to minimize disruptions to the hospital, and starting shifts at 5:00 AM to complete noisy or disruptive work before staff arrived. Our team’s effective navigation through these challenges enabled us to complete the project on time and under budget, marking it as a significant success for Elford, our subcontractors, NCH, and their vendors.
