Project Description
Pilot Dogs, Inc. was established in 1950 to train and furnish Pilot Dogs to guide the blind. The current kennel was built in 1963, and in need of significant, costly repairs to remain in service. Moving the kennel adjacent to their other facilities on West Town Street will bring their entire organization to one unified campus. The new kennel is essential to provide the best care for their dogs which will sustain their projected growth for at least the next two decades.
The new kennel houses 160 dogs, allowing Pilot Dogs to serve 180 blind and visually impaired individuals annually. New students coming for their first guide dog will be required to live on-site for a 28-day familiarity and training session. Those who are seeking a second or third guide dog will only stay on site for two weeks. The facility also includes a 2-bay garage for transportation, veterinary medical space and an OR facility for surgery.
