Project Description

Encompassing four hospitals and a large animal practice, the OSU Veterinary Health System provides care for more than 72,000 canine, feline, equine and farm animal patients each year. This project aims to provide an all-weather, multipurpose space for equine gait evaluation to improve lameness specialists’ ability to effectively diagnose and treat performance problems in equine athletes.

This arena will create opportunities for evaluation of horses in-hand and under tack, assessment of lameness while traveling at different gaits and on different surfaces, expansion of caseload/research opportunities, and outreach activities. The Equine Performance Evaluation Arena will also serve as a powerful recruitment and retention tool for world-class faculty and students. A 2017 Design Study includes a building site analysis, open arena and finishes, underground utilities and alternate options including heating, fire protection, and specialty equipment. It is also desired to have a covered connection between the new arena and existing Galbreath Equine Center.
