PROJECT DESCRIPTION

To address the demand for parking around the Greater Columbus Convention Center, the Franklin County Convention Facilities Authority (FCCFA) Board conducted a site feasibility study resulting in the addition of a new garage on the east side of the Convention Center. The facility is intended to maximize the availability of parking on the site with minimal impact to traffic flow around the area. The precast garage has six levels with approximately 650 total parking spaces.

The parking facility incorporates a single helix design with 90-degree parking and two-way traffic in the two bays. Safety features include glazed stair towers, emergency phones on each level, and open stair and elevator lobbies. Electrical, mechanical, plumbing, storage, equipment, and elevator machine rooms are located on the ground level, which is below the main entry aligned with the first supported level. Located at the ceremonial front entry to the complex, the garage features a kinetic façade to welcome visitors entering from the adjacent elevated roadway interchange.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A 58,445 SF interior office tenant fit-out for BakerHostetler’s Columbus office on floors 10-12 in a downtown urban office building. The reception area is encrusted in light marble and rich, dark walnut. A collection of thin slats of angled wood are located behind the receptionist, offering privacy to the conference rooms behind. All of the wood in the office is from two walnut trees grown in the southern US. Instead of slicing planks, the trees were spiraled resulting in a long grain traveling from floor to ceiling where wood has been placed.

A 30,000-lb., free-standing marble staircase is located in the center of the office with a collection of Chihuly glass pieces on pedestals underneath. The employee dining and lounge area overlooks a view of the Scioto riverfront. Construction was completed as an occupied building.

The renovation of the historic, 1800s Columbian Building in downtown Lancaster transformed this iconic building into the Fairfield County’s Municipal Court Building. The project scope included a complete restoration of the existing facade, including rebuilding the parapet peaks and turret roof structure, a repurposing of the existing three floors and basement, as well as a small addition to the rear of the building. The new Municipal Court Building now includes three courtrooms, judges’ chambers, offices for probation, prosecution, the city clerk, a drug testing facility, pretrial services, a public lobby and other court support services. Additionally, it includes new millwork and heating, cooling, lighting, communications, security and power systems and accessories.

Elford worked closely with the owner, architect and engineering teams to assess the conditions of the building and to make it structurally sound. In addition to the exterior and interior renovations, the scope of work included site improvements, renovations to the existing parking lot, alley access and new lighting, relocation of existing building utility services and connection to the existing sanitary and storm sewer systems.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Greater Columbus Convention Center consists of two facilities totaling over 1.7 million SF. The North Facility, constructed in the early 1990s, has a linear floor plan with a main concourse that runs through the spine of the facility. Exhibit hall space lines the concourse on the east side and meeting rooms and ballrooms along the west side. The North Facility is connected to the new Hilton Columbus Downtown Hotel by the glass skybridge. The South Facility, originally constructed in the 1970s, consists of an underground parking garage, a food/retail court, meeting rooms and grand ballrooms. This facility is connected to the Hyatt Regency on the west side of the building.

The renovation of the facility will upgrade all concourses, meeting rooms and ballrooms located in the North and South facilities. Scope includes but is not limited to carpet, wall coverings, color, materials, lighting fixtures, ceiling tiles, furnishings and bathroom fixtures. The intent of the project is to refresh the convention center with a new look while also enhancing a client’s use and experience.

In addition to the complete renovation, the convention center will be expanded adding 36,000 SF of exhibit hall space, 10,000 SF of new meeting spaces and a grand two-story entrance at the corner of Goodale and High Street complete with a public art installation. A new skywalk connects the convention center with a new 800-space parking garage on Goodale Street.
